Looking for alaska plot analysis Essay Sixteen year old Miles twin passions are reading biographies and collecting the last words of the famous. Deciding to search for, in the last words of the great Francois Rabelais, the great perhaps, Miles leaves his family in Florida and moves to Alabama to complete his final two years of school at Culver Creek Preparatory School. Miles is befriended by his gifted roommate, Chip, who prefers the name The Colonel, and included in the Colonels group of friends, among them Alaska, vibrant, charismatic and dynamic, but also deeply depressed. Alaska is not only brilliant at devising pranks, but drinks and has sexual intercourse. When Miles falls for (and lusts after) Alaska, she becomes critical to his story. Slowly the reader builds a picture of the main characters as each reveals their story. When Alaska dies in a car crash, her favorite last line from Simon Bolivar, How will I ever get out of this labyrinth? takes on a poignant meaning. The story changes as Miles and the Colonel come to terms with the loss of a friend who was central to their lives. Only by discovering the real ause of Alaskas death can they overcome their guilt at surviving her. John Greens masterpiece revolves around a night that plays a central role and an important part in this whole young adult fiction. This can be seen as the book starts at 136 days before a particular moment in the book, and as the countdown goes on, building up the suspense throughout till the last page of the book. Alaska then starts crying, and says that she has to leave, but Pudge and the colonel are too confused and drunk to function sanely, and hence cause a distraction so Alaska could sneak out of the campus grounds. Climax Alaskas death was the climax of the story. The boys were taken in shock because neither of them was expecting it. Alaska seemed fine the last time they saw her, so they were completely in awe at the news they received. Things werent the same without Alaska; there was a soft feeling of depression and loss that blanketed the entire school. Pudge and The Colonel started questioning everyone around them, while trying to get to the bottom of the situation, decode her death and find who was her death because both of them were hurt and wounded, clueless of what to do to solve the situation. Falling Action Pudge and the Colonel go through depression; they feel guilty for Alaskas death, for letting her go. They devote their time trying to decipher Alaskas impetus to kill erself, then they find out that the day before that night was the day Alaskas mom had died, and shed forgotten, shed been going to put flowers on her mothers grave. Resolution Pudge and the Colonel decide to pull one last prank worthy of Alaska. On Speaker Day, a day when the class gets to pick a speaker for the whole school to listen to, they hire a male stripper who strips in front of the school. Throughout the story, there were two quotes that has been the central theme. l go to seek a Great Perhaps. Last words of Francois Rabelais and How will I ever get out of his labyrinth? , Last words of Simon Bolivar. The possibility of finding the great perhaps was the reason Pudge moved from his home in Florida to Alabama where through his adventurous Journey he came across his next mystery through Alaska, the words of Simon Bolivar, The Labyrinth of life. Simon Bolivars last words played an important role till the end of th e story where finally Pudge finds the light in the darkness; the moment of enlightment that he was seeking all along! In the end, Pudge finds the meaning of the Great Perhaps. The labyrinth of life has no end.

My Thoughts on October 11, 1491 by Ursula K. Le Guin free essay sample

After quickly scanning the poem, it is quite evident to me that it is an entailment of the struggles faced by the Native Americans in lieu of Christopher Columbus’ 1492 expedition, which inadvertently ended up in the Americas. I love how cautiously suspicious (and justifiably so) the narrator is of the newcomers in the beginning of the poem. It seems that the native peoples were only initially concerned with what superficial wealth might be lost to what they saw as mystical invaders. Did they not realize that the very fiber of their beliefs and society were about to go to pot? A bit further along in the poem we get a glimpse of this in what I believe is some of the most superlatively-crafted foreshadowing I have seen in quite some time. If you haven’t caught on by now, I am referring to the lyrics from the popular Christmas carol â€Å"I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In†, which was written in BRITAN and published in, appropriately enough, 1666 C. We will write a custom essay sample on My Thoughts on October 11, 1491 by Ursula K. Le Guin or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page E. This poem, due to the fact that it accurately foretells the future, is written in the third-person omniscient form, from what I believe to be the perspective of a supernatural Native American entity of the time period. The usage of a phrase such as â€Å"You will see three ships come sailing in.† is evidence to the inevitable Western influence on the Native American social structure and system of beliefs. The narrator, being all-knowing, was unable to stop any of these negative things from happening to his/her peoples. This, I think, points to why we, as humans, are not all-knowing. â€Å"All knowing† is undoubtedly synonymous with â€Å"ever-worrying†; the narrator knows of the impending calamity and the sickening bastardization of his/her peoples’ culture that is soon to transpire, yet he/she remained utterly helpless. The question now is, was this poem a warning to the Native Americans or simply the resigned lamentations of the raconteur? I am inclin ed to believe that it is the latter. If this was a warning, history certainly doesn’t reflect such, given that the Native Americans were woefully ill-prepared for any outside influence, much less that of the ruthless Europeans. The narrator refers to the Native Americans as â€Å"you† throughout the overwhelming majority of the poem, yet in the second-to-last stanza, he uses the pronoun â€Å"we†, which to me is additional evidence to support my theory that the narrator is a somewhat supernatural entity, yet one whom is connected, to some degree, with his/her peoples. The fact that the narrator continually refers to the world as â€Å"young† and voice quite a number of concerns for how the foreigners will treat the earth, brings to my attention the deep, intrinsic respect that the Native American peoples had for their environment. Just imagine the total mental inability on the part of the natives to grasp the selfish, capitalistic, â€Å"What can I get f rom this monetarily?† attitude that the European â€Å"explorers† had towards it. I am also quite fond of how the narrator sees the world growing older as a direct result of the European â€Å"invasion†. The natives are completely oblivious to and other â€Å"world† than their own and it seems only natural that they would perceive it to be â€Å"young†, due to the fact that it is full of vibrancy and verve, just like a young person would stereotypically be. This type of oneness with nature is yet another indicator of their deeply rooted (ancestrally, no doubt) reverence for the earth. The aforementioned inevitability of the arrival of the Europeans and their subsequent abuse of the land and the Native American peoples, causes the narrator to elaborate on how his/her people will react to the situation. It is no coincidence to me that the narrator chooses to be short and sweet in doing this. This stanza is the last of the poem, and its to-the-point, y et emotionally riveting arrangement is, to me, tantamount with the initial contact between the Europeans and the Native Americans – the indigenous peoples were timorous yet hopeful , whilst the foreigners were quick and precise in their avaricious exploitation of the natives.

Free Essays on John Gotti

The American gangster has become as American as †¦say†¦apple pie! For decades people have both marveled at and been reviled by this genre of criminal activity in the United States. Few organized crime figures have completely captured the attention of the public as John Gotti has over the past 20 years. We have had our celebrity mobsters in the past. Analysis of Microsoft Gulf There is no use denying the fact that modern age could be characterized by blistering development of corporations which managed to seize various markets and introduce its products or services to people who reside in different parts of the world. Additionally, blistering development of globalization and various means of transport made cooperation between departments of a company, which are situated in a great number of countries, easier.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Analysis of Microsoft Gulf specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More That is why, nowadays, we can observe several huge international companies that struggle with each other in order to grasp the market and obtain extra benefits. It is obvious that usually the most perspective directions of development and regions are chosen. Traditionally, Europe and the USA had been taken as such regions. Thus, nowadays, the shift of priorities could be observed as countries which were comparatively weak in the past start to develop and attract attention. It should be said that the UAE has become one of these states. Having great oil deposits and developed oil extraction industry, the state can boast one of the greatest incomes in the world. That is why, blistering development of the economy of the UAE coincided with the growth of the number of offices that represent various international companies. With this in mind, the main aim of the given paper is the analysis of the main peculiarities of the functioning of Microsoft Gulf department, that is the part of a great Microsoft corporation and now functions within the territory of the UAE. It is obvious that the given company tries to introduce its products and services to new and perspective market and that is why, its functioning is organized in the most beneficial and efficient way. First of all, it should be said that Microsoft corporation is one of the most famous and beneficial companies in the worl d which annual income is bigger than the budget of many states (Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), 2015). Though, it is obvious that any company has to evolve and promote its further development in order to remain topical and beneficial. Under these conditions, Microsoft Company realized the necessity of new markets that will be able to increase the demand for its products and result in the significant increase of the level of incomes. However, one should mind that the process of introducing products to the new market is rather complicated and consists of a great number of various peculiarities that should be taken into account while trying to take on the market. Peculiarities of language, culture and demands of customers should be given great attention while analyzing the state of the new market and creating the strategic plan. With this in mind, along with the decision to introduce its services to the Gulf region, Microsoft company also organized the department which main task is to al ign efficient and beneficial functioning of the company in the region.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Microsoft Gulf nowadays is one of the most beneficial international companies that function all over the world and in the Gulf region, trying to provide qualified services to its customers in terms of peculiarities of local demands that could be taken as the reflection of customs, traditions and the state of the economy of the country. In other words, it is possible to say that Microsoft Gulf tries to spread its influence in the UAE, creating new departments and organizing new ways to work and improve the quality of services. Having outlined the background for the development and introduction of the products of Microsoft corporation to the UAE market, it is also possible to start the analysis of the given company from the determination of its shareholder structur e and the role which shareholders play in the functioning of a company. First of all, it should be said that being a giant international company with great incomes, Microsoft is obviously organized according to rather popular pattern that is able to guarantee its efficient functioning. The company is ruled by the shareholders council which consists of people who possess companys shares. They do not perform managerial functions, thought, they accept some very important strategic decisions and determine the way in which company will develop. It should also be said that the shareholder structure is quite simple though efficient. The shares of the company are distributed between the main shareholders who now are Steven Ballmer with 333 million shares, then comes Bill Gates with 330 million and other important shareholders who own shares which comprise not more than 1% of the total number (Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), 2015). However, due to the peculiarities of the shareholder structure , there are shares which could be bought by anyone who wants to become the shareholder of the Microsoft company (Sheridan, 2014). The shares of the company could be bought on the brokers board or directly from the shareholder. However, one should mind that Microsoft is a giant international corporation with the great level of incomes, that is why its shares cost a lot and if a person wants to become not just a common shareholder, but to have the right to participate in the shareholders council, he/she has to by at least one percent of shares. However, Microsoft organizes annual shareholders meetings in order to inform people about the strategic steps performed by the company and keep in contact with them.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Analysis of Microsoft Gulf specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More These meetings are organized with the help of various web technologies so the shareholders do not have to go to the main office. With this in mind, it is possible to conclude that the shareholder structure of Microsoft company is organized according to the traditional pattern as the main shareholders are able to manage the company and accept some important strategic decisions, while the rest of shareholders could just collect dividends from owning shares of the company. Nevertheless, it is impossible but mention the way in which the process of the company is organized and how the main tasks are accomplished. With this in mind, it is possible to say that being the international company which centers on the production and distribution of various IT technologies, Microsoft tries to guarantee the efficient and clear process of delivery of a product and payment because its image depends on it. Thus, having a great number of plants and factories all over the world. the company organizes its functioning in the way that could guarantee that the needed device or hardware will be delivered to the needed place i n time. Moreover, it has to be of a good quality in order to meet the standards of the company, that is why the main principles of TQM are also implemented in the functioning of the company. Besides, one of the main peculiarities of the companys process is the great attention given to the credibility of partners and methods they use to pay for their products. That is why, Microsoft declares the standardization of its procurement practices. In other words before payment can be approved, every Microsoft supplier has to be approved by the Microsoft Procurement group, have signed an agreement with Microsoft, and have a purchase order in hand (Our Process, 2003, para. 2). This procedure helps to avoid a great number of various problems connected with the payment methods and trust between partners. Moreover, the given practice makes the control over the spending of a company easier and Microsoft could manage its finances, deciding what sphere or project to invest. Additionally, it helps t o make the process of communication with some potential customers easier as this mechanism can prevent the appearance of various problems. Nevertheless, being one of the most beneficial companies in the world, Microsoft deals with great money flows. It is obvious that this process is also controlled and monitored. The company works mainly with cashless transfers. Customers payments, which come from the purchase of a product or some service, are transferred to the banking account of the company. This account serves for the further distribution of costs. It is also obvious that relevant authorities control all money flows in order to get rid of mistakes of currency violations. The given model turns out to be rather efficient and productive.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More It should also be said that such a great company as Microsoft should obviously have a certain insurance strategy which main aim is to get rid of some unexpected and unpleasant cases and guarantee the stable functioning of a company and security for its workers. That is why the company pays about $20 million annually for commercial insurance (Wojcik, 2009). This insurance includes property coverage, crime, ransom, kidnap employment practices liability and a great number of other points (Wojcik, 2009). Additionally, there are some other nontraditional risk-finacning solutions that could provide about $2 billion dollars for the company in case of some complications or unexpected situations (Wojcik, 2009). It should be said that the main aim of buying insurance of the company nowadays is the attempt to guarantee security for all top managers and common workers in case of some catastrophic losses. Officials of the company do not eliminate the possibility of some natural catastrophe and w ant to be prepared for it. That is why, great sums of money are spent on it. However, Microsoft does not spend money on some issues which are taken as not important or expected. Some intellectual losses are not covered by the insurance as Microsoft has other remedies and tools to protect it. With this in mind, it is possible to state the fact that the company wants to protect itself in case of emergency and buys insurance only if it could be taken as cost effective. Thus, having a great number of various assets like DirectX, Nokia, Xbox and many others, the company also provides insurance for them in order to be ready to compensate losses for staff that works at various departments. It should also be said that the Microsoft company cares not only about its facilities and products. though, it provides various kinds of services and bonuses for its staff. First of all, it is possible to say that work at this very company can be beneficial because of the high level of salary. However, i t is not the only advantage. The thing is that Microsoft provides complete and beneficial insurance for all its workers. First of all, one can admit 100% paid healthcare, including the dental one (Microsoft Careers, n.d). It means that if a worker of a company gets sick he/she can count on good treatment that will be provided in various hospitals of the UAE or the state that will be chosen by a worker. Moreover, there is the practice of maternity leave, when mothers receive eight weeks of paid maternity disability leave. Additionally, there is a paternal leave that provides benefits for new families in order to establish relations within the family. Thus, it should be said that there is a developed system of bonuses that could help to increase the level of performance of a worker and stimulate his/her better functioning. Workers, who can be described as very precise and efficient, receive some bonuses which show them that their efforts are appreciated. Moreover, there are some extra benefits, such as gyms, discounts and social clubs that serve to create the beneficial atmosphere for a worker and help him/her to become the part of a collective (Microsoft Careers, n.d). With this in mind, it is possible to state the fact that high insurance rate of the company helps to make its workers feel secure and appreciated. With this in mind, it is possible to state the fact that the insurance provided for workers of the Microsoft company could be taken as one of the best in the world. However, it should also be said that workers also have to pay for this insurance. Usually, money is kept back from wages during the year that is why the sum is not so great for a worker. For example, it should be said that employees will be required to pay out-of-pocket maximums of $1,000 to $2,500 for catastrophic coverage (Eaton, 2010, para. 4). Thus, the given sum could be taken as quite fair in terms of existing insurance practice. The thing is that workers, who pay this money, are supp lied with the 100% free health care that could be much more expensive. That is why, these payments are taken by the company only for the purchase of the insurance connected with some severe complications or conditions, while the rest is paid by the company. That is why, existing insurance practice could be taken as a quite efficient one. Resting on these facts, having analyzed the main information connected with the activity of Microsoft corporation in the Gulf region, it is possible to make a certain conclusion. It should be said that realizing the great importance of the new and developing market, the company tries to organize it functioning in the most efficient way. Being ruled by the shareholders council, it tries to create clear and efficient pattern according to which the company will function and evolve. Microsoft already has great incomes in the given regions and, moreover, want to increase them. Additionally, wise and outstanding insurance policy, which main aim is to prot ect the top managers and workers of the company from various unexpected complications, also leads to the improvement of the image of Microsoft and attraction of new workers and customers. That is why, it is possible to conclude that Microsoft has good perspectives for its development in the Gulf region. References Eaton, N. (2010). Kiowa song Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Kiowa song - Essay Example According the legends, Kiowa belonged to the Yellowstone River territories in Western Montana from where they migrated to the Black Hills. Their culture primarily centered on their associations with the Buffalo. Nearly all aspects of Kiowa life had internalized buffalo. For instance, their tepees, clothes, and moccasins were all prepared with buffalo skin. They used the whole buffalo for several daily life functions. In addition, buffalo had been central to Kiowa religion which is expressed in many rituals. For instance, Sun Dance, healing prayers, and ritualistic songs are strongly associated with Kiowa quest and honor for great buffalo herds (Hager). During nineteenth century, Kiowa culture was devastated by buffalo herd obliteration on Great Plains. With exceeding buffalo hunt by professional hunters, Kiowa culture and religion were also crushed. Buffalo hide served as a precursor of modern art tradition as Kiowa’s used it as their canvases for recording the intricate detai ls, story, and drawings of the fall of nomadic culture. In their encounter with white culture, imprisoned Kiowa warriors expressed their nostalgia and sorrow to ledger-book drawings. These drawings were acknowledged by white culture as elaborate roots of Indian art (Hager). Kiowa songs and dances originated from the tribal tradition and experiences of death and life.

Ethics In The Workplace Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Ethics In The Workplace - Essay Example The worst thing about Bob’s act in cheating the old man is lowering the belief in the basic nature of a fellow human being. Part C: Yes, it is very important to keep a word of promise, irrespective of whether the promisee is known or not or whether we see that person again or not. Failure to keep a promise is an act of cheating that is violating the other person’s right not to be abused. For the person indulging in cheating, it also involves living with that guilt feeling forever and consequently suffering a loss of self-esteem. While deciding on the policy with its ethical implications, I would be guided by not sentimental or political considerations but by the consequential results of my action. The larger question would then be: Will doing business in China, albeit with censored version of services, lead to opening a window of opportunity, however small an opening it may be, for the people of China? Most certainly it does. According to Google’s policy, politically unacceptable information would be blocked out and the viewer informed of the same. This act by itself and the frequency with which such blockades take place are most likely to be a source of embarrassment to the authorities who can be expected to slacken the controls – in other words, open the window a little more. Thus, Google’s policy, while being Utilitarian morally, also has the desirable objective of contributing to the common good of the customers in the longer run. iii). ‘Ends do not always justify means’ is my new perception, after the lessons. In personal life or professional life, even when difficult decisions are to be taken, I would act in as transparent a manner as possible to make my objective clear and ethically

The History of Racism in Australia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

The History of Racism in Australia - Essay Example In the Australian learning environment, the issue of racial discrimination has affected the way aboriginal students are treated. As a teacher, I feel the war against racial discrimination in Australia should begin in the education sector. The PDHPE teachers should be committed to implementing the various efforts that have been put forward to eliminate racial discrimination in this country. I feel that creating a fair learning environment that empowers the aboriginal students and establishes equity in activities such as sports will work well in the war against racial discrimination. Â  In Australia, the sports sector has been dominated a by a great manifestation of racial discrimination. Shannon (2013) points out that if the sport was a litmus test for racism the results would be pretty damning. The idea of Shannon is that Australian sports sector has shown the highest level of racial discrimination. This racial xenophobia in sports is a factor that has a long history in Australia and still persists today. One of the ways that racial discrimination is dominated is through the absence of aboriginal players within the existing sports teams. For instance, the first Aborigine to play cricket in Australia was seen as a great asset to the society. Shiney was the first person to play Cricket in 1835 in Australia and he became a historical icon. When he died, his head was kept in a museum to signify the rarity of such an aborigine icon. Between the year 1850 and 1987, after the death of Shiney, only 10 Aborigines has made it into the cricket teams in the country. The s tatistical coverage of the involvement of Aborigines in the Australian sports environment shows that racial discrimination in the sports sector was severe and affected the aborigines negatively. Â  Secondly, there were many stereotypical references to the Aborigines who enrolled in the sports teams.

Brown vs. Board of Education Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Brown vs. Board of Education - Essay Example In issuing the verdict on May 17, 1954, the Court set aside the ruling in Plessy v Ferguson 163 U.S. 537 (1896), which had permitted states to segregate the education system within their jurisdiction provided there were similar facilities in black and white schools. Led by Chief Justice Earl Warren, the Court noted that â€Å"separate but equal† policy had actually triggered massive inequality in the US’s education system (Rose 325). The decision essentially triggered a flurry of reactions by the supportive civil rights movement and was attributed to the significant integration of education in the United States around the mid-20th century. In 1896, a similar case had reached the Supreme Court, but one which legitimized segregation based on the â€Å"separate but equal† principle. In Plessy v. Ferguson, the majority decision led by Justice Brown held that the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution was clearly categorical that an ideal system should be one in which all communities are guaranteed equal protection in separate institutions (Smikle 39). The Court argued that the constitution recognized differences and separations based on color, race, ethnicity and other social and political factors, hence the legality of segregation in government-run schools. Owing the persistence of social divisions and the disproportionately lower level of education among blacks since 1896, the plaintiffs brought up a class action suit against the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas in the US’s Kansas District Court in 1951. The claimants comprised of more than a dozen parents whose who felt that their children had been denied their constitutional rights by the then Topeka School District. The parents’ attempt to register their children in education facilities which were nearest to them was denied on the basis of segregation policy. Their denial of an education opportunity prompted them to seek court’s guidance on the issue (Rose

Land Law solve the problem with Sunnydale Cottage Essay

Land Law solve the problem with Sunnydale Cottage - Essay Example †¢In May 2006, Charlotte went abroad for a few months on holiday. She sent post cards to each of the other inhabitants of Sunnydale Cottage saying that she had met Costas, a Greek waiter, and wanted to marry him. Accordingly, she notified them all that â€Å"My one fifth share in Sunnydale Cottage is to be ring-fenced and should anything happen to me Costas is to get it.† The postcard to Barbara was lost in the post and never delivered. Charlotte has tried of Costas and has now returned to live in Sunnydale Cottage. The TLATA avoids this problem as there is no duty to sell under a trust of land, merely a power of sale. All land subject to a trust will be held on a "trust of land" (TLATA s 1). Existing settlements are excluded, but land already held on express or implied trusts for sale are included within the provision. Although it is still possible to create express trusts for sale, as a subset of the trust of land, this will rarely be appropriate for domestic situations, and even here the power to postpone sale cannot be excluded. This means that there is no longer a problem posed by an imperative duty to sell, in situations where that was the last thing intended. One of the most important features of the TLATA is the nature of the trust of land. No longer is there a duty on the trustees to sell the land, there is simply a power to do so if desired. This perhaps reflects the fact that the reasons why trusts are set up nowadays are not the same as in 1925. The trustees of land, when exercising any function relating to the land subject of the trust, are now under a duty (as far as practicable) to consult with beneficiaries of full age and beneficially entitled to an interest in possession in the land. They must give effect to the wishes of those beneficiaries, so far as they are consistent with the general interest of the trust. If there is a dispute among the

Summary of chapter 9- business ethics - Essay Example These stereotypes may be based on societal beliefs or may directly target certain ethnic groups. There may also be normal processes inherent in the company byline which they are not aware of. These processes may look nondiscriminatory at first glance but their use can lead to discriminatory practices such as policies which predicate nominations on existing members. Moral arguments are firmly based on racial and sexual grounds. Since discrimination predicates itself on the shortcomings of a group or an individual within a group, utilitarians reject such principles since they can harm collective wellbeing. Kantians however believe that this practice fails to acknowledge people as individuals. Universally it is impossible to consider that people would willingly allow themselves to be subjected to such treatment. Rawls’s theory suggests that â€Å"parties in the original position would choose for themselves the principles of equal opportunity.† Such actions go against the belief in human equality. No one would actively support such actions. An example of elimination from society through legal and political means include slavery and the repeal of the 19th amendment. Given that discrimination is predicated upon existing attitudes and practices, there is an unequal stake for women and minorities in the working environment. Even though Americans have the highest living standard in the world today, minorities in comparison of Caucasians make less income and are prone to being poor. Minorities and women are shoe horned into jobs with lower paying salaries despite doing the same amount of work as their counterparts. There have been few inroads into the top ranks in the professional business world. The U. S Supreme Court states that numerical discrepancies do not directly point to disparity in the work place, though societal examples and practices speak otherwise. Lawsuits for both sexual and

Professional Development in Nursing | Reflection

Professional Development in Nursing | Reflection In order to enhance knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed for a safe and effective nursing practice, this reflective piece aims to demonstrate the author’s commitment to the need for professional development contribution and personal supervision activities. Through leadership, peer support, supervision and teaching this account will further enhance the professional development and safe practice to others. To achieve these aims, backed with supportive evidence, the author shall use a case study to enable him make discussions and debates. To maintain confidentiality, names of people and places mentioned in this account has been anonymised in accordance to NMC code of professional conduct (NMC, 2010). During the mid-point of his final placement, Bruce was instructed by his mentor to assume the primary nurse role for 73 year old Alice who was detained in an inpatient psychiatric unit under section 3 of the Mental Health Act. Alice was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease dementia with a history of falls, self-neglect and aggressive behaviours toward staff and fellow patients. Following Alice’s CPA review, additional medication was prescribed to her after a mutual agreement between Alice, her family and the MDT as rapid deterioration in her mental state was a concern. CPA (2008) recommends that patients, family and carers should be involved in decision making in regard to their care plans. To promote medication adherence, NICE (2009) declares that, patients should be involved in decisions about prescribed medication to enable them to make informed choices. Bruce was not aware of Alice’s new prescribed medication because he had 2 days off from work. Upon return to work, Bruce volunteered to be the nurse in charge of the shift to enable him gain more confidence and build his leadership skills. Whilst Bruce was being supervised during the morning medication rounds as guided by (NMC, 2010). Alice noticed that there was a new medication so she asked Bruce purpose of the additional medication. Bruce could not confidently explain the purpose of the medication so he asked Dora his mentor who stood by to explain to Alice. Alice became extremely angry and agitated, hostile and physically aggressive towards Bruce accusing him of wanting to kill her however, staff intervened and managed to de-escalate the situation. NICE (2005) recommends that at the first signs of agitation or violent behaviour, staff should first try to calm the patient down using de-escalation methods. Taking the above scenario into consideration one can say that Bruce acted proactively by volunteering to co-ordinate the shift. However, Bruce should have been more concerned to find out the outcome of Alice’s CPA meeting as her acting primary nurse. NMC (2008) asserts that the care of people should be your first concern, treating them as individuals and respecting their dignity. Since Bruce volunteered to coordinate the shift, he could have delegated some of the task i.e. medication rounds to other qualified nurses to enable him to catch-up with what happened at the ward during his absence. Delegation of task enables the team leader to be able to devote more time to those tasks that cannot be delegated. With more time available, the leader can invest time and energy into developing practice, improving standards and influencing decisions that affect their service (Garland and Sullivan, 2010). It was a bad practice for Bruce to administer medication without knowing it purpose as a nurse. NMC (2010) affirms that, nurses must know the medicine’s therapeutic use, its normal dosage, side effects, precautions and contra-indications before administering it. Bruce should have checked the use of the newly prescribed medication in the British National Formulary (BNF) before administering it to Alice (NMC, 2010). Bruce could have also asked Dora about the purpose of the newly prescribed medication when he realised he was not familiar with it even before dispensing it into the pot for Alice. However, one can say that Bruce acted professionally by acknowledging his limitations and therefore asked Dora to explain the use of the newly prescribed medication to Alice. NICE (2009) recommends that as a good practice, nurses should provide patients with verbal and written information regarding their prescribed medication to promote medication concordance. Bruce in a meeting with Dora identified the need for developing his medication administration and management skills and agreed on an action plan under his mentor’s supervision. Care Quality Commission (2013) affirms that supervision provides opportunity for staff to review their performance, set objectives in line with the organisation objective and service needs, and identifies training and continuing developing needs. Bruce further identified the need for research on medication administration, management and medication training all these shall be accomplished under the supervision of Dora. Bruce also has requested to be more involved in medication administration and did a research and found out that, patients must always understand the reason for taking a particular drug. NICE (2009) recommends that, at intervals agreed with the patients, staff should review patients’ knowledge, understanding and concerns about medicines, and patients view of their need for medicine b ecause these may change over time. Bruce had the opportunity to learn how to write CPA reports, tribunal reports and continued to build his confidence in writing plans of care and risk profiles by assuming the primary nurse role for Alice. Bruce also seized the opportunity by being the primary nurse to Alice to gain a better understanding of the MDT working. DOH (2004) ten essential shared capabilities recommends that professionals, patients, family and carers should work in partnership to provide quality care. By volunteering to coordinate the shift gave Bruce the insight of the responsibilities and what to expect from a qualified nurse. Coordinating the shift enabled Bruce to research more about his leadership styles, improved on his communication and delegation skills and his management. Bruce also had the opportunity as the shift coordinator, to do an incident report about Alice’s physical aggression towards him under Dora’s supervision. It can be argued that Alice was not supposed to behave that way however, she could forget about her CPA meeting and the newly prescribed medication because of the symptoms of her illness. Wrycraft (2009) declares that, typical symptoms of dementia are loss of memory, confusion and a change in personality, mood and behaviour. NHS (2012) confirms that, common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease include memory loss, especially problems with memory for recent events, such as forgetting messages, remembering routes or names, and asking questions repetitively. Based on the above account, a nurse should always reflect and evaluate his or her practice then plan future practice areas for development.

False position method and bisection

False position method and bisection In numerical analysis, the false position method or regula falsi method is a root-finding algorithm that combines features from the bisection method and the secant method. The method: The first two iterations of the false position method. The red curve shows the function f and the blue lines are the secants. Like the bisection method, the false position method starts with two points a0 and b0 such that f(a0) and f(b0) are of opposite signs, which implies by the intermediate value theorem that the function f has a root in the interval [a0, b0], assuming continuity of the function f. The method proceeds by producing a sequence of shrinking intervals [ak, bk] that all contain a root of f. At iteration number k, the number is computed. As explained below, ck is the root of the secant line through (ak, f(ak)) and (bk, f(bk)). If f(ak) and f(ck) have the same sign, then we set ak+1 = ck and bk+1 = bk, otherwise we set ak+1 = ak and bk+1 = ck. This process is repeated until the root is approximated sufficiently well. The above formula is also used in the secant method, but the secant method always retains the last two computed points, while the false position method retains two points which certainly bracket a root. On the other hand, the only difference between the false position method and the bisection method is that the latter uses ck = (ak + bk) / 2. Bisection method In mathematics, the bisection method is a root-finding algorithm which repeatedly bisects an interval then selects a subinterval in which a root must lie for further processing. It is a very simple and robust method, but it is also relatively slow. The method is applicable when we wish to solve the equation for the scalar variable x, where f is a continuous function. The bisection method requires two initial points a and b such that f(a) and f(b) have opposite signs. This is called a bracket of a root, for by the intermediate value theorem the continuous function f must have at least one root in the interval (a, b). The method now divides the interval in two by computing the midpoint c = (a+b) / 2 of the interval. Unless c is itself a rootwhich is very unlikely, but possiblethere are now two possibilities: either f(a) and f(c) have opposite signs and bracket a root, or f(c) and f(b) have opposite signs and bracket a root. We select the subinterval that is a bracket, and apply the same bisection step to it. In this way the interval that might contain a zero of f is reduced in width by 50% at each step. We continue until we have a bracket sufficiently small for our purposes. This is similar to the computer science Binary Search, where the range of possible solutions is halved each iteration. Explicitly, if f(a) f(c) Advantages and drawbacks of the bisection method Advantages of Bisection Method The bisection method is always convergent. Since the method brackets the root, the method is guaranteed to converge. As iterations are conducted, the interval gets halved. So one can guarantee the decrease in the error in the solution of the equation. Drawbacks of Bisection Method The convergence of bisection method is slow as it is simply based on halving the interval. If one of the initial guesses is closer to the root, it will take larger number of iterations to reach the root. If a function is such that it just touches the x-axis (Figure 3.8) such as it will be unable to find the lower guess, , and upper guess, , such that For functions where there is a singularity and it reverses sign at the singularity, bisection method may converge on the singularity (Figure 3.9). An example include and, are valid initial guesses which satisfy . However, the function is not continuous and the theorem that a root exists is also not applicable. Figure.3.8. Function has a single root at that cannot be bracketed. Figure.3.9. Function has no root but changes sign. Explanation Source code for False position method: Example code of False-position method C code was written for clarity instead of efficiency. It was designed to solve the same problem as solved by the Newtons method and secant method code: to find the positive number x where cos(x) = x3. This problem is transformed into a root-finding problem of the form f(x) = cos(x) x3 = 0. #include #include double f(double x) { return cos(x) x*x*x; } double FalsiMethod(double s, double t, double e, int m) { int n,side=0; double r,fr,fs = f(s),ft = f(t); for (n = 1; n { r = (fs*t ft*s) / (fs ft); if (fabs(t-s) fr = f(r); if (fr * ft > 0) { t = r; ft = fr; if (side==-1) fs /= 2; side = -1; } else if (fs * fr > 0) { s = r; fs = fr; if (side==+1) ft /= 2; side = +1; } else break; } return r; } int main(void) { printf(%0.15fn, FalsiMethod(0, 1, 5E-15, 100)); return 0; } After running this code, the final answer is approximately 0.865474033101614 Example 1 Consider finding the root of f(x) = x2 3. Let ÃŽÂ µstep = 0.01, ÃŽÂ µabs = 0.01 and start with the interval [1, 2]. Table 1. False-position method applied to f(x)  =  x2 3. a b f(a) f(b) c f(c) Update Step Size 1.0 2.0 -2.00 1.00 1.6667 -0.2221 a = c 0.6667 1.6667 2.0 -0.2221 1.0 1.7273 -0.0164 a = c 0.0606 1.7273 2.0 -0.0164 1.0 1.7317 0.0012 a = c 0.0044 Thus, with the third iteration, we note that the last step 1.7273 à ¢Ã¢â‚¬  Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ 1.7317 is less than 0.01 and |f(1.7317)| Note that after three iterations of the false-position method, we have an acceptable answer (1.7317 where f(1.7317) = -0.0044) whereas with the bisection method, it took seven iterations to find a (notable less accurate) acceptable answer (1.71344 where f(1.73144) = 0.0082) Example 2 Consider finding the root of f(x) = e-x(3.2 sin(x) 0.5 cos(x)) on the interval [3, 4], this time with ÃŽÂ µstep = 0.001, ÃŽÂ µabs = 0.001. Table 2. False-position method applied to f(x)  = e-x(3.2 sin(x) 0.5 cos(x)). a b f(a) f(b) c f(c) Update Step Size 3.0 4.0 0.047127 -0.038372 3.5513 -0.023411 b = c 0.4487 3.0 3.5513 0.047127 -0.023411 3.3683 -0.0079940 b = c 0.1830 3.0 3.3683 0.047127 -0.0079940 3.3149 -0.0021548 b = c 0.0534 3.0 3.3149 0.047127 -0.0021548 3.3010 -0.00052616 b = c 0.0139 3.0 3.3010 0.047127 -0.00052616 3.2978 -0.00014453 b = c 0.0032 3.0 3.2978 0.047127 -0.00014453 3.2969 -0.000036998 b = c 0.0009 Thus, after the sixth iteration, we note that the final step, 3.2978 à ¢Ã¢â‚¬  Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ 3.2969 has a size less than 0.001 and |f(3.2969)| In this case, the solution we found was not as good as the solution we found using the bisection method (f(3.2963) = 0.000034799) however, we only used six instead of eleven iterations. Source code for Bisection method #include #include #define epsilon 1e-6 main() { double g1,g2,g,v,v1,v2,dx; int found, converged,i; found=0; printf( enter the first guessn); scanf(%lf,g1); v1=g1*g1*g1-15; printf(value 1 is %lfn,v1); while (found==0) { printf(enter the second guessn); scanf(%lf,g2); v2=g2*g2*g2-15; printf( value 2 is %lfn,v2); if (v1*v2>0) {found=0;} else found=1; } printf(right guessn); i=1; while (converged==0) { printf(n iteration=%dn,i); g=(g1+g2)/2; printf(new guess is %lfn,g); v=g*g*g-15; printf(new value is%lfn,v); if (v*v1>0) { g1=g; printf(the next guess is %lfn,g); dx=(g1-g2)/g1; } else { g2=g; printf(the next guess is %lfn,g); dx=(g1-g2)/g1; } if (fabs(dx)less than epsilon {converged=1;} i=i+1; } printf(nth calculated value is %lfn,v); } Example 1 Consider finding the root of f(x) = x2 3. There are times it may converge very, very slowly. Example: What other methods can we use? Comparison of rate of convergence for bisection and false-position method

Child Development Essay -- Parenting Raising Children

Final Draft Throughout the world, it can be seen that members of different cultures raise their children in such a way that they can be productive as a responsible, mature members of society. It is the parents' responsibility to mold them into a productive individual. Parents often try to shape the child into what they believe is best for that child. Sometimes, the children's development does not conform to the ideals of other cultures. It can also be seen that gender plays a big role in the development of these children. The years in which children learn to be aggressive, or not, is prior to the age of five. I will try and associate the factors of aggressiveness and child development to portray whether or not it influences the aggressiveness of that culture. First of all, a definition of the variables to be discussed is at hand. In defining aggression, we run into problems with the cross-cultural variations between cultures. A positivist approach considers actions that cause harm to another--for example, murder or punches--to be clear examples of aggression in any cultural context. The relativist on the other hand tends to think on terms of the cultural or situational context of actions. Certain actions may not be actually aggressive but viewed in a different /way /nature/. For example, when punches are thrown in horseplay, they are restrained in their severity. Therefore, they are not aggressive in nature. When employing aggressiveness, different venues are often used in the face of social conflict. These strategies include verbal insults or physical abuse, like murder or assault. Whether or not an individual chooses to be direct or indirect/,/ depends on their preference. One may choose the direct approach and co... ...n is that they may have impossible expectations of their children. They have a tendency to live their lives through their children and push them too far. Also, the child is defiant or constantly demanding in their eyes. They have strong urges to hurt and may have acted on those urges to some extent. Conflicts arise with parents throughout life. It is important to learn to deal with these conflicts in a manner that is acceptable to the society. From the day a child is born up until puberty, a child is close with at least one if not both of the parents. Conflicts usually start during the twelve to seventeen year old period. A separation from the parents in the form of friends being more important than them promotes and is even catalytic in conflict confrontations. These confrontations range from a quiet withdrawal from the parent to raging arguments on every issue.

Biography of Isaac Newton :: Sir Isaac Newton Essays

Sir Isaac Newton Jan 4 1643 - March 31 1727 On Christmas day by the georgian calender in the manor house of Woolsthorpe, England, Issaac Newton was born prematurely. His father had died 3 months before. Newton had a difficult childhood. His mother, Hannah Ayscough Newton remarried when he was just three, and he was sent to live with his grandparents. After his stepfather’s death, the second father who died, when Isaac was 11, Newtons mother brought him back home to Woolsthorpe in Lincolnshire where he was educated at Kings School, Grantham. Newton came from a family of farmers and he was expected to continue the farming tradition , well that’s what his mother thought anyway, until an uncle recognized how smart he was. Newton's mother removed him from grammar school in Grantham where he had shown little promise in academics. Newtons report cards describe him as 'idle' and 'inattentive'. So his uncle decided that he should be prepared for the university, and he entered hi s uncle's old College, Trinity College, Cambridge, in June 1661. Newton had to earn his keep waiting on wealthy students because he was poor. Newton's aim at Cambridge was a law degree. At Cambridge, Isaac Barrow who held the Lucasian chair of Mathematics took Isaac under his wing and encouraged him. Newton got his undergraduate degree without accomplishing much and would have gone on to get his masters but the Great Plague broke out in London and the students were sent home. This was a truely productive time for Newton. He conducted experiments on sunlight and prisms. He discovered that sunlight was made up of different colors. This lead to his work on reflecting telescopes. At the same time he was working out his ideas of planetary motion. He returned to Cambridge in 1667 and became the a fellow, earned his MA and the following year became the chair of the math department. he then wrote a book on optics. Newton worked cooperatively wiht other scientists such as Robert Hookeand Edm und Halley on planetary motion. But he was later bitter and resentfull not wanting to give other any credit for their contributions to his work. Newton went on to serve in government positions such as a member of Parliament and later as Warden of the Mint. His only words spoken as a member of parliament were "shut the window." He had a mental breakdown of sorts resulting in thoughts of persecutiojn mania later in life.

Regal Entertainment Group Weaknesses

Regal’s substantial lease and debt obligations could impair our financial condition. Regal has substantial lease and debt obligations. As of December 31, 2009, they had total debt obligations of $1,997. 1 million. As of December 31, 2009, Regal had total contractual cash obligations of approximately $6,330. 3 million. If Regal is unable to meet their lease and debt service obligations, they could be forced to restructure or refinance their obligations and seek additional equity financing or sell assets Our theatres operate in a competitive environment. The motion picture exhibition industry is fragmented and highly competitive with no significant barriers to entry. Moviegoers are generally not brand conscious and usually choose a theatre based on its location, the films showing there and its amenities. Generally, stadium seating found in modern megaplex theatres is preferred by patrons over slopefloored multiplex theatres, which were the predominant theatre-type built prior to 1996. Although, as of December 31, 2009, approximately 80% of Regal’s screens were located in theatres featuring stadium seating, we still serve many markets with sloped-floored multiplex theatres. These theatres may be more vulnerable to competition than their modern megaplex theatres. Regal depends on motion picture production and performance. Regal’s ability to operate successfully depends upon the availability, diversity and appeal of motion pictures, our ability to license motion pictures and the performance of such motion pictures in our markets. We license first-run motion pictures, the success of which has increasingly depended on the marketing efforts of the major motion picture studios. Poor performance of, or any disruption in the production of these motion pictures (including by reason of a strike or lack of adequate financing), or a reduction in the marketing efforts of the major motion picture studios, could hurt their business. Development of digital technology may increase our capital expenses. The industry is in the process of converting film-based media to electronic-based media. There are a variety of constituencies associated with this anticipated change, which may significantly impact industry participants, including content providers, distributors, equipment providers and exhibitors. An increase in the use of alternative film delivery methods may drive down movie theatre attendance and reduce ticket prices. Regal also competes with other movie delivery vehicles, including cable television, downloads via the Internet, in-home video and DVD, satellite and pay-per-view services. Traditionally, when motion picture distributors licensed their products to the domestic exhibition industry, they refrained from licensing their motion pictures to these other delivery vehicles during the theatrical release window. A material contraction of the current theatrical release window could significantly dilute the consumer appeal of the in-theatre motion picture offering, which could have a material adverse effect on Regal. Regal depends on their relationships with film distributors. The film distribution business is highly concentrated, with ten major film distributors accounting for approximately 95% of our admissions revenues during fiscal 2009. Regal depends on maintaining good relations with these distributors. No assurance of a supply of motion pictures. Regal cannot assure ourselves of a supply of motion pictures by entering into long-term arrangements with major distributors, but must compete for our licenses on a film-by-film and theatre-by-theatre basis. A prolonged economic downturn could materially affect our business by reducing consumer spending on movie attendance. Regal depends on consumers voluntarily spending discretionary funds on leisure activities. Motion picture theatre attendance may be affected by prolonged negative trends in the general economy that adversely affect consumer spending. A prolonged reduction in consumer confidence or disposable income in general may affect the demand for motion pictures or severely impact the motion picture production industry, which, in turn, could adversely affect Regal’s operations.

OMD Project Management Essay

Background Information: OMD Project Management is a consultancy that provides construction project management for its clients. OMD Project Management was set up approximately eighteen months ago and has a staff of three. They have access to a large skill base, which may be called upon as required to satisfy project conditions. This helps to reduce overheads and increase profit ability. The works include the following services: * measured surveys, * Schedule of condition (report on the state of the building, identifying any areas that will incur rectification at the clients cost. * Lease appraisal (review legal documents on clients behalf) * Cost estimate of works. * Tender works to specialist contractors * Manage projects * Agree final costs of the project with contractors on behalf of client * Ensure statutory regulations are complied with (planning approvals building regulations and disabled discrimination act) Although OMD Project management is a small company it has a large client base. These vary from large multi-national companies to small private businesses. They specialise with the retail sector where they have at least twenty years of experience Problem: A current issue that the company has is invoicing. Invoicing currently can take up to an hour to complete. Invoicing is currently done by hand and on paper, this is not a very efficient way of doing this job because it takes up too much time and human error is often an issue. These errors can include charging too much or too little money. By providing an invoice system it would save the company large amounts of time an effort. It would also reduce the amount of human error and increase the accuracy of the invoice. Current Invoice System: OMD project management currently do all of their invoicing on paper. This means that the consultant will remember his hours his expenses and his hourly rate in his head and when it comes around to invoicing the client he will type all of these things up on to Microsoft word, print it off and give it to the client so the are able to pay the company. As you could gather this is a very inefficient way of invoicing the client. This can also lead to large amount of errors during the invoicing process, for example a client may be under charged or over charged. End User Skills: The main user of the document that I will create is of the older generation. He prefers to do things the ‘old fashioned’ way, this means that he likes to do his invoicing on paper using a calculator and a pen and it would currently take him longer to create an invoice on the computer than it would for him to do it on paper, however he is not total computer illiterate and he is able to use most word processing and spread sheet programmes. OMD Project Management would like to me to create an invoice system that is simple yet effective so that he is able to save time by moving his invoice system onto computer and they would also like me to create a system that is able to be used by everyone in the company. Requirements: General: * The invoice must be in Lucida sans console. * The text must be black in colour * The program must be user friendly * The company logo must be at the top of the invoice * The client’s address must be at the top left of the page but lower than the logo. * The invoice number should be on the left hand side of the page and below the address. * A breakdown of the invoice should be in the middle of the page just below the invoice number. * The total, in bold, will go underneath the invoice breakdown. * The company address will go at the bottom of the page. * It must look professional. Qualitative: * The program must be able to hold all of the different types of expenses. * The program must be able to hold different types of jobs. * The program must double up as an estimating system. * The program must produce an accurate invoice. * The program must hold different client addresses Quantitative: * From start to finish the invoice must only take 15 minutes. * The invoice must be able to hold 3 different types of jobs * The program must be able to hold at least 20 different client addresses Hardware and Software: There is a currently a huge amount of hardware available on the market. You can buy many different types of computer each one suitable for a different purpose, for example laptops are portable and can be taken anywhere, this can be very convenient as the user is able to do his work anywhere and also with the invention of wireless technology the user can connect to the internet anywhere that wireless internet is available. Another type of PC that is available is desktop PC. This is a PC that stays stationary. This type of PC gives you a lot more room to type etc and also has a mouse as standard, these can be permanently linked up to a printer and/or the internet. The current system that OMD Project management runs is a Compaq Presario with an Intel Pentium 4 processor. OMD Project Management feels that there is no need to purchase a new system because they feel that their current system is sufficient and suitable for the job in hand. There are many different types of software that is suitable for this project. I believe that the most appropriate is a spreadsheet package. This is because you are able to use the program to calculate lots of different things. With a bit of self teaching you are able to use the program to do lots of different processes. OMD Project Management already has Microsoft office XP installed on their system and they feel that I should use Microsoft Excel to create their invoice system. This is so that it is compatible with their system. I believe that this is a good choice as Excel is more than adequate for the task in hand. Input: Enter the job type code Enter all the things to with the amount of work done: * The number of days worked. * Enter the correct code that corresponds to the appropriate price paid per day Enter all the relevant expenses details: * The number of miles travelled and the number of nights stayed in a hotel. Enter the code for the desired client address Enter the client addresses. * Code number * Address line 1 * Address line 2 * postcode * contact number Process: Lookup the type of job according to the code and multiply the rate of pay by the number of days worked. Calculate the amount of expenses owed for travelling. Calculate the amount of expenses owed for staying in hotels. Calculate sub-total, VAT and the final total. Output: A full invoice with the amount owed for work done and the amount owed for expenses with sub-totals, VAT added and the final total at the end. It should also display the company logo, company address, company logo and the client address. It should look professional. Test Strategy: I will test my program in three different ways. I will ask my end user to use my new system and ask them to give me feedback on it so I am able to adjust it to their liking. Also I will devise tests that will be conducted during and after the implementation stage this will allow me to improve my system greatly and identify any errors that are in my system. Test Number Test Test Data Expected Outcome Actual Outcome Corrective Action 1a b c Check date Validation rule. Normal 10/08/05 Extreme 32/08/05 Erroneous 374hcbsi Will accept Data. N/A The button will take you back to the main menu page. As expected 21 Give the program to OMD project Management for them to test it Implementation Log 17/11/05 The first stage of my implementation was to insert two worksheets. I then renamed my worksheets for easy reference; the sheets will be named Main Menu, Summary, Breakdown, Job Type and Client Details. Here I have entered all of the column headings for the client details addresses Here I have highlighted cells A1:F51 this allows the user to enter up to 50 different addresses as stated in the requirements. I then named the table Address. Here I have entered all the data for the different types of jobs. And here I have formatted the cells to currency so that the data in these cells is displayed as a currency. I highlighted cells B2:D5 and inserted a name. The table name is now jobs. Here I have entered all of the headings for this table and I have then highlighted cells A1:F15 and named them Breakdown. Here I have entered the vlookup formula, that will lookup the different rates that correspond to the code No. entered and put them onto this sheet. As you can see the vlookup formula has worked as it has entered the rate of pay. I have also put in the formula to workout amount of money owed. I have entered the formula to calculate the amount of money owed for travelling. Here I have entered the formulae to work out the total amount of money owed for expenses and to work out the money owed for staying in hotels. I have also formatted all the cells containing monetary values to currency. As you can see here I have entered all the text onto the summary sheet. Here I have entered a validation rule to the date cell on the invoice which only allows a date to be entered in the format 00/00/00 and it must be greater than 01/01/2000. I also added my own error message to inform the user of what the need to enter. Here I have entered the vlookup formula which will lookup each part of the address that corresponds to the code and the transfer them onto this sheet. I entered the same formula for the 4 cells below but each time increasing the column index number by one. This is the formula that copies the amount of money owed for work from the breakdown sheet onto the summary sheet. This formula is the same as above except that it copies the total amount of expenses owed instead of the amount of money owed for work Here is the formula to calculate the sub-total. And here is the formula to work out the VAT to be added. And finally the formula that will work out the total amount of money owed. This is me recording the macro that will take you from the main menu page to the breakdown page. I will do the same for each macro that is used for navigation. To create the macro button I used the forms toolbar and clicked on the button icon and I drew the button. I then right clicked it and assigned the appropriate macro to it. So now whenever I click the button it will take me to the specified page. Here I am assigning the macro to the macro button. I have recorded a macro that deletes all the entries that have been entered into the invoice breakdown sheet. This macro button clears all the information, on the invoice summary page, that changes. And for the addresses it changes the code so that a line is displayed instead of the client address. I did this each time I recorded a new macro and just chose a new name for it.

Beautiful Disasters Pearl as a Living Breathing Scarlet Letter essays

Beautiful Disasters Pearl as a Living Breathing Scarlet Letter essays Sometimes beauty is found in places as unexpected as a rosebush growing outside of a prison in a puritan colonial village. Pearl Prynne is an unearthly beautiful child with a wild spirit born under unimaginably sinful conditions, all of which are somehow related to the ideas, actions, and views of others on Hesters punishment. In Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter, Pearl serves as Hesters living, breathing Scarlet letter. Pearl evokes the same emotion and reactions from the townspeople, as does the scarlet letter. The people look at the slight sense of pride Hester has in her letter in the same way they look at the way Hester lets Pearl do whatever she wants. They feel Hester isnt fit to raise the child. The extremity of gossip from the females of the village in the beginning of the book is only matched by the amount that Pearls wild attitude stirs up later on. Hesters A is the example for all of what sin is. The A makes Hester much avoided and the parents tell their children to watch out for her. Theses same parents say the same things to their kids about avoiding Pearl, who is infamous for her uncontrollable behavior with her peers and other adults. Just as infamous as Hesters A for the wild sinful actions it Like Hesters scarlet letter, Pearl shows extreme beauty in a form that is not traditional, positive, tame, or fully accepted. When Hester crafts the A that she has to wear on her chest, She uses a deep, passionate shade of red and embroiders it very intricately with bright gold thread. The A was meant to mark Hester in a negative manor; its purpose is to let everyone know that Hester is a sinner. Hester takes something extremely negative and makes it appear as passionately beautiful. Hawthorne portrays Pearl in a very detailed specific manor, meant...

OxiClean to Remove Skunk Odor

OxiClean to Remove Skunk Odor OxiCleanâ„ ¢ (sometimes spelled OxyClean) is a great stain remover, but its also a great odor remover. I was having dinner with an awesome veterinarian who mentioned her dog had been sprayed by a skunk. She saw that the dog was wet and bent down to touch its fur. The dampness was skunk spray, so she then had a handful of stinky nastiness, too. I said I had heard tomato juice was supposed to be decent at diminishing skunk-smell. Nope, doesnt work. What does work, she said, is spraying the pet with OxiClean and then very thoroughly rinsing, presumably with soap and water since that is how you are supposed to get OxiClean off your hands if you have skin contact. A Product Of Many Uses This is not an official vet-recommended treatment for skunk spray for a couple of reasons. The active ingredients in OxiClean (and similar products, which would also work) are sodium carbonate (washing soda) and sodium percarbonate. They react to form peroxide, which is an effective bleach and disinfectant, plus is reactive enough to tackle most messes. Its also reactive enough to cause damage to certain tissues. If you read the MSDS for sodium percarbonate, for example, you will find the chemical is harmful if swallowed and may cause severe eye injury. If you spritz OxiClean in water on yourself or your pet to remove skunkiness, you need to be absolutely certain to avoid getting any in the eyes. Plus, you need to take extra care to rinse all of the OxiClean off. You might not lick your hands after washing them, but chances are your cat or dog will. Cat, in particular, lick their fur and are highly sensitive to chemicals. Its best to check with a veterinarian before applying any prod uct to a feline. How It Works OxiClean should work as an odor remover pretty much the same way as it works as a stain remover. The hydrogen peroxide that is released reacts with stain molecules and changes their structure. This makes them absorb light differently, rendering colored stains colorless. Note that this does mean the stains are actually gone; you just cant see them. Stink molecules are like stains. If you change their shape, the chemoreceptors in your nose may be unable to detect them. So,  if you have an encounter with the business end of a skunk, try reaching for the Oxiclean instead of the V-8. Avoid the eyes and rinse, rinse, rinse.

Death of the Salesman American Dream Research Paper Example

Death of the Salesman American Dream Research Paper Example Death of the Salesman American Dream Paper Death of the Salesman American Dream Paper Essay Topic: Death Of a Salesman American Dream Written by Arthur Miller and a classic play of American theatre, Death Of A Salesman is a great book about how Willy Loman, a travelling salesman who has been working for thirty-four years, strives to become a successful man in America. However, Willy interpreted successful as what he considers as the â€Å"American Dreambeing â€Å"well-liked† and â€Å"attractive†, which he took too seriously and in end led to his tragic death. Always clinging onto his dream, Willy has lived in his own illusions throughout his whole life. Even more unfortunate, his son Biff has been living under his shadows and ended up as failure. Having an American Dream may not be a bad motivation for life, but Willy held on to this dream as if it was everything. An example from the book is when Biff realizes that his fathers’ many mistakes, they both get into an argument, which is also the climax of the play. During the argument, Biff asked his father, â€Å"Will you take that phony dream and burn it before something happens? This clearly shows that Willy is deeply possessed by his dream. As the play goes further on, Willy even wanted to die to show Biff that his â€Å"attendance at the funeral† will show how popular he was. His belief of worth â€Å"being dead than alive† finally led to his tragic death, also leaving his family in a bad condition. From the above two examples, it can be shown that the American Dream has blinded Willy. Only letting him realize the disparity between the dream and reality, and p utting on pressure for the poor man to commit suicide.

Challenger essays

Challenger essays Even some sixteen years later I still remember the day and what I was doing when I heard that the space shuttle Challenger had exploded. I was five years old in 1986, attending elementary school and being a normal five year old. On Tuesday January 28, 1986 I was home sick from school being babysat by my grandmother because my parents were at work. I knew that day was important because we had talked about the space launch in school and planned on watching it that day. The space launch was extra special this time because it was going to be the first time a civilian would go into space and this was no ordinary civilian it would be a high school teacher named Christa McAuliffe. Just like everyone else tuned into the television that morning I witnessed before my eyes the worst space disaster to date. Dubbed the most memorable moment of the 80s the Challenger explosion was the 80s children most memorable event. There were several reasons that the explosion has had such an affect on my generation. The space launch was being broadcasted across United States live from Kennedy Space Center in Florida (Mahal). This launch was one of the most publicized launches due to the first civilian going into space and also that the launch had been delayed five times before (Mahal). The launch took place on January 28, 1986 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida (Mahal). The skis about Kennedy Space Center were clear and the sun was out in the sky. However the day was very cold the temperature were only slightly above freezing. This launch was going to be the coldest that NASA had ever launched before. The time of lift off was 11:38 AM Eastern Standard Time this was when the 25th shuttle mission lifted off headed towards space. The shuttle would never make it into space it exploded only seventy-three seconds after liftoff killing all seven members of its crew. The video footage of the explosion is the most haunting thing about the mome...

Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 15

Management - Essay Example As the Plant Manager and with my style of leadership, I am confident that this can be improved and the issues among the management and the employees can be sorted out in an amicable manner. One of my biggest strengths is the ability to negotiate and to create a working environment where the employees and management can work in accordance with each other. The need for a sensitive, understanding, and a good negotiator will assist in solving the current issue. As the plant manager, my aim is to ensure that the change process within the organization is as smooth as possible and it has a complete win – win situation for both sides, i.e. employees and management. The next weekly managers meeting could bring out the implementation of a knowledge management system within the organization along with managers being made responsible to let the employees know of the current changes and plans of the management. This will allow the employees to be sure that the dealings and changes are all transparent and the employees will have a basic idea of what can be expected. Also, the development of the knowledge management systems will allow the employees to manage and leverage information and knowledge within the organization so as to improve decision-making and gain competitive advantage. In addition, knowledge management activities have tried to capture the tacit knowledge that people carry around with them, what they learn and observe from experience rather than what is explicitly stated in different forms. People have to be recognized as valuable assets and is much more than merely capturing data or manipulating it to obtain information. Managing intellectual capital requires a change in mindset. Use of this along with being transformational leaders will help the company grow to a great extent and will reduce the employee issues. This type of leadership is a case where the one or more people together with the others

Property Tax Funding For Public Schools Research Paper

Property Tax Funding For Public Schools - Research Paper Example Instead of doing that, they make equal per-student funding available from their â€Å"General Tax Revenues† for all schools statewide. Most of the Americans declare that they are the supporters of the â€Å"Equal Funding† for the public schools, but the wealthy and the influential citizens often resist the attempts to remove the funding discriminations. This disagreement may be a sign of unawareness about the funding disparities, thoughtless approval of the conventional & long established methods for funding of education, and egotistical yearning to maintain the â€Å"Personal Taxes† at a low rate. The â€Å"Legal and Political† attempts to modify and remove the inequalities have been feeble at the â€Å"Federal Level†. But significant commotion has started to take place in the state courts and governing bodies. This paper ends with suggestions and policy propositions for struggling â€Å"Political and Cultural† conflict to reform. Introducti on: Property taxation and school funding are inter-linked with each other in United States. It has been known that almost half of the property tax revenue is used for funding public, elementary and secondary schools. It has become a hot topic to debate, across the United States as to which extent the public schools should be supported by the funds collected from property taxes. School funding is a controversial topic and it has become a matter to be resolved for almost every state.   It has been estimated  that independent school districts receive 96% of their tax revenues from property taxes. This makes it clear that public school funding rely more on property taxation as compare to grants collected from local government (Fisher, 2007). Whereas on the other hand, almost half of the total property tax revenue collected are also in financing public elementary and secondary schools in the United States. According to the statistics of 2004-2005, United States spent total of $488.5 billion on public elementary and secondary education, with nearly 47 percent of the funds received from state sources, 44 percent funds obtained by local sources with just 9 percent of the contributions derived from federal sources. However, it is a known fact that local funds are mainly received from taxes, primarily the property tax. Since 1952, local governments’ dependence on property taxes has dropped, whether measured as a percentage of local tax revenue, own source general revenue, or total general revenue. There have been quite many strong views on both property taxation and school finance. The strongest statements typically in general disapprove of local property taxes or their use for funding education. A latest assessment of policies in the New England states, a region that rely more greatly on property taxes than the rest of the country, faces strong criticism for this dependence, as stated by Pierce and Johnson (2006) that high property taxes along with the weigh t and perverse incentives they generate, the frenzy they create, the overall town to town school funding inequities they grow typically symbolizes a never-ending series of nightmares for New England. Thus as recommended by the authors, its has been noticed  that New England states need to restructure their  tax systems by lowering their dependency on

Media imperialism PowerPoint Presentation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Media imperialism - PowerPoint Presentation Example Media imperialism and cultural imperialism pose great negative effects not only to the local media but also the consumers of the content. The local media stand to lose since they may be swallowed or taken over by large media corporations. According to (Desai and Agrawa 2009, p. 19) cultural –media imperialism theories had predicted that the importation of television channels would lead to demise of local cultures and cultural industries without considering complex patterns of television production, distribution and consumption. Generally, a perception of cultural consequence of the control of various media products is based on a view that mass media as primarily manipulative agents capable of having direct, unmediated effects on the audience behavior and world view (Tomlinson 2002). He asserts that there are also good reasons for cultural-media imperialism especially for the Marxists in understanding domination of the media. The consumers tend to be influenced by the cultures of the dominant media. Such culture influence may be a threat to the National security of a Nation especially where the culture of terrorism is inculcated in the minds of the local consumers. In addition to this effect, the contents of the dominant media can also be biased. The media content may not capture the more pressing issues of the home country instead focus on the world news. In most cases world news coverage may not be of importance to the consumers of the home country. Such a state is dangerous to a state.

Black Test Car by Masumura Yasuzo Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Black Test Car by Masumura Yasuzo - Essay Example Such screenshot occurs to justify its effect in the view of the audience from whom to expect mixed sentiments of tension, suspense, and desperation at the sight of a principal character whose constant presence seems to evolve in shadows or in a state of thick gloom while the other part of the atmosphere receives a faint amount of light to indicate how transitions take place. Masumura Yasuzo evidently knew which perspective suits the scene that must evoke an image of stealth and treachery via a choice of lighting where the dark side makes a sharp contrast with the bright side. At an angle where the back of the man in focus forms the black before the others that make the white counterpart with their faces revealed, it feels that somewhere, something is bound to establish and sustain the conflict. Equivalently, the musical score in this portion of the story suggests undertones of pressure because of the human nature or instincts being portrayed by the conferring characters in a spot hidden from public notice. One necessarily observes herein that the manner in which dialogues blend with instrumentation rather sounds like there would be a consequence of opportunity or of mystery based on how words and music flow together to communicate the complex thoughts and sensitive gestures that could either make or break a plan in the end. Moreover, all the men in this thematic image generally project an appearance void of pleasant expressions which I think further contributes to the heavy and serious air of encounter between them.
